YOUR SALARY IS NOT THE PROBLEM

💰 YOUR SALARY IS NOT THE PROBLEM: LEARN HOW TO MANAGE THE MONEY YOU HAVE’
Why do some people earn a good salary and still struggle financially?
And why can someone with a modest income sometimes manage to build savings, support their family and gradually improve their life?
The answer isn’t always how much money you make.
Sometimes, it’s what you do with the money you make.
Let’s be honest.
You can earn 200,000 FCFA and spend every franc.
You can earn 500,000 FCFA and still spend every franc.
You can even earn 1,000,000 FCFA and find yourself broke before the end of the month.
A bigger salary does not automatically create financial discipline.
1. Stop spending everything because you earned it
One of the most dangerous financial habits is:
“I worked for this money, so I deserve to spend it.”
Yes, you worked for it.
But you also need to remember that your future self will need money too.
When your salary arrives, don’t immediately treat it like a celebration.
Pay your essential expenses.
Set something aside.
Plan your spending.
Then enjoy what remains responsibly.
Enjoying your money is not wrong. Spending all of it is the problem.
2. Create a budget—even if your income is small
Some people say:
“I don’t earn enough to make a budget.”
Actually, that’s one of the reasons you need a budget.
You need to know:
How much comes in?
How much goes to rent?
How much goes to food?
How much goes to transportation?
How much goes to family responsibilities?
How much goes to debt?
How much can you save?
How much can you spend on entertainment?
A budget doesn’t make you poor.
It tells your money where to go before it disappears.
3. Learn the difference between needs and wants
You need food.
You need somewhere to live.
You need transportation.
You need basic clothing.
You may need internet for work or education.
But do you need the newest smartphone?
Do you need expensive clothes every month?
Do you need to eat at expensive restaurants every weekend?
Do you need to attend every party?
Do you need to upgrade your lifestyle every time your salary increases?
Learning to say “not now” can protect your finances.
4. Don’t borrow money to impress people
This deserves special attention.
Sometimes people borrow money for:
Weddings
Parties
Phones
Cars
Clothes
Vacations
Social events
Why?
To look successful.
But the people you are trying to impress may forget your expensive outfit tomorrow.
You, however, will still have to repay the debt.
Don’t sacrifice your financial future for somebody else’s opinion.
5. Save before you spend
A powerful habit is to treat savings like an expense.
When money comes in, don’t wait until the end of the month to see what remains.
Because if you do, there may be nothing left.
Set aside a reasonable amount first.
Even if it is small.
10,000 FCFA.
20,000 FCFA.
50,000 FCFA.
The amount matters less than developing the habit.
Over time, consistency can become more powerful than occasional large savings.
6. Build an emergency fund
Life doesn’t always send a warning.
Your phone can break.
Your car can develop a problem.
You may suddenly need medical attention.
A family emergency may occur.
Your income could temporarily disappear.
Without savings, every unexpected expense becomes a crisis.
Try to gradually build an emergency fund that can cover essential expenses.
Savings give you options.
And options are valuable.
7. Invest in yourself
Not every franc you earn should go into consumption.
Some should improve your future earning ability.
Learn a new skill.
Take a useful course.
Buy tools for your work.
Improve your professional knowledge.
Get better at communication.
Learn technology.
Develop a skill people are willing to pay for.
The best investment you can make is often increasing your ability to create value.
8. Be careful with lifestyle inflation
Imagine you earn 250,000 FCFA.
You get a better job and start earning 400,000 FCFA.
Instead of saving the difference, you immediately increase everything:
Better apartment.
More expensive phone.
More expensive clothes.
More expensive restaurants.
More expensive transportation.
Soon you’re earning 400,000 FCFA but living as if you’re still struggling.
Then you get another increase.
The same thing happens again.
This is called lifestyle inflation.
As your income grows, allow your savings and investments to grow too.
Don’t let every salary increase become an excuse to increase your expenses.
9. Take debt seriously
Debt isn’t automatically bad.
A carefully considered loan can sometimes help someone buy a productive asset or expand a viable business.
But consumer debt used to maintain appearances can become dangerous.
Before borrowing, ask:
Why am I borrowing?
Can I comfortably repay it?
What happens if my income decreases?
Is this debt helping me build something—or simply helping me consume something?
Think before you sign.
10. Don’t try to look rich—try to become financially strong
There is a huge difference.
Looking rich means people think you have money.
Being financially strong means you can handle your responsibilities.
It means you have savings.
It means you control your spending.
It means you don’t panic every time an unexpected bill arrives.
It means you can make decisions without being controlled by financial desperation.
Quiet financial stability is better than loud financial appearance.
🇨🇲 A message to young Africans
We need to change the way we think about money.
Money is not only for consumption.
Money should also help you build security, opportunity and independence.
You don’t need to become wealthy overnight.
Start with simple habits:
Earn.
Budget.
Save.
Learn.
Invest wisely.
Avoid unnecessary debt.
Build your skills.
Repeat.
Your financial future is built from many small decisions.
And here’s the truth nobody likes hearing:
You cannot always control how much you earn today, but you can learn to control how you manage what you earn.
💬 LET’S TALK
What is the number one financial mistake young people make today?
👇
1. Spending everything they earn
2. Borrowing to impress others
3. Not saving
4. Poor budgeting
5. Gambling with money
6. Lifestyle inflation
7. Lack of financial education
Comment your answer and explain why.
Share this with someone who needs to rethink how they handle money.
