🔥 IF I WERE 20 AGAIN, THESE ARE THE 10 THINGS I WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY
If I could go back to being 20 years old, I wouldn’t necessarily try to change everything.
I would simply make better decisions earlier.
At 20, many of us believe we have plenty of time.
We waste opportunities.
We ignore advice.
We spend money carelessly.
We worry too much about what people think.
And sometimes, we only understand the importance of time when it has already passed.
So, if I were 20 again, these are 10 things I would do differently.
1. I Would Take Learning More Seriously 📚
I wouldn’t study only to pass examinations and collect certificates.
I would focus on learning things that can actually help me solve problems and create opportunities.
I would learn:
- Communication
- Technology
- Business
- Financial management
- Digital skills
- Public speaking
- Negotiation
A certificate is valuable.
But the ability to do something useful is even more valuable.
2. I Would Start Learning a Valuable Skill Earlier 💻
I would not wait until graduation before asking:
“What can I actually do that people are willing to pay for?”
I would choose a skill and take it seriously.
Programming.
Graphic design.
Digital marketing.
Video editing.
Teaching.
Sales.
Writing.
Cybersecurity.
Data analysis.
A practical skill can become an additional source of income—and sometimes even a career.
3. I Would Stop Trying to Impress People 📱
At 20, many people spend too much time worrying about what others think.
The clothes.
The phone.
The parties.
The pictures.
The lifestyle.
But here’s something I would tell my younger self:
Most people are too busy worrying about their own lives to spend as much time judging yours as you think.
I would stop spending money I don’t have to impress people who may not even care.
4. I Would Start Saving Earlier 💰
I don’t care how small the amount is.
I would develop the habit.
10,000 FCFA.
5,000 FCFA.
20,000 FCFA.
Whatever I could reasonably save.
The goal would not be to become rich overnight.
The goal would be to build discipline.
Because financial problems become much easier to manage when you have developed the habit of keeping something for tomorrow.
Small savings can become big opportunities when combined with time and discipline.
5. I Would Choose My Friends More Carefully 🤝
Not everyone around you wants to see you grow.
Some people only like the version of you that makes them comfortable.
I would spend more time around people who:
- Encourage growth
- Challenge me to improve
- Respect my goals
- Tell me the truth
- Inspire me to think bigger
Your environment matters.
The conversations you listen to repeatedly can eventually influence the life you build.
6. I Would Take Better Care of My Health 🏃
When you’re young, you often feel invincible.
You can stay awake all night.
Eat anything.
Ignore exercise.
Work without rest.
But your body remembers.
If I were 20 again, I would take sleep, exercise, nutrition and rest more seriously.
Success is difficult to enjoy when your health is constantly fighting against you.
7. I Would Stop Being Afraid of Failure 🚀
I would start more things.
Try more ideas.
Learn from mistakes.
Take calculated risks.
At 20, failure can feel embarrassing.
But later, you realize something important:
Most successful people have failed more times than you have even tried.
I would rather fail while learning than spend years wondering:
“What if I had tried?”
8. I Would Understand That Success Takes Time ⏳
This is a big one.
I would stop expecting everything to happen immediately.
A successful career takes time.
A profitable business takes time.
Building skills takes time.
Saving money takes time.
Building a good reputation takes time.
Social media makes success look instant.
But behind many successful people are years of work nobody posted online.
Don’t rush your journey because somebody else posted their destination.
9. I Would Build Relationships, Not Just Contacts 🌍
I would stop thinking networking means collecting people’s phone numbers.
Real relationships matter.
I would learn from teachers.
Respect mentors.
Stay connected with former classmates.
Meet people in my field.
Offer value when possible.
Your reputation can sometimes open doors before your CV is even read.
People remember how you work.
They remember how you treat others.
They remember whether you are reliable.
Your name is part of your personal capital. Protect it.
10. I Would Believe in My Ability to Build a Better Future 🌱
Perhaps the biggest mistake young people make is believing that their starting point determines their ending.
You may come from a difficult background.
You may not have connections.
You may not have money.
You may not know exactly what you want yet.
That’s okay.
Start where you are.
Learn what you can.
Use what you have.
Meet people.
Develop yourself.
Make mistakes.
Try again.
You don’t need to have your entire life figured out at 20.
But you should start taking responsibility for the direction of your life.
💬 THE TRUTH ABOUT GETTING OLDER
If I could speak to my 20-year-old self, I wouldn’t tell myself to become rich immediately.
I would say:
“Be patient, but don’t be lazy.”
“Dream big, but learn practical skills.”
“Save money, but don’t forget to live.”
“Listen to advice, but think for yourself.”
“Take risks, but don’t gamble with your entire future.”
And most importantly:
“Don’t waste years trying to become someone people will admire. Spend those years becoming someone you will be proud of.”
