Becoming Her 2.0

Becoming her is not about pretending you have arrived. It is about understanding how personal growth, preparation, resilience and small beginnings can gradually shape the woman you envision.

There are days when becoming her feels like looking at a woman who lives in another world. You can see that version of yourself so clearly in your mind. She has the career you want, the confidence you are still building, the financial stability you are working toward and the peace that comes from knowing exactly who she is.

Then you look around at your own life, and reality seems very different.

Maybe the job has not come yet, your bank account does not reflect your dreams, or your career is still taking shape. Perhaps you are learning, starting over, applying, creating, failing and trying again, all while wondering when everything will finally begin to make sense.

That gap between where you are and where you want to be can be uncomfortable. However, it does not necessarily mean that you are failing. Sometimes, it simply means that you are still becoming.

Before the woman in the mirror became Madam C.J. Walker

CJ Walker

Consider Sarah breed love, who later became known as Madam C.J. Walker, the entrepreneur who built a successful hair-care business for Black women in the early twentieth century.

Her beginning looked nothing like the success that would eventually follow.

Born in 1867 to formerly enslaved parents, Sarah was orphaned at seven. She later worked as a washerwoman before moving to Denver in 1905 with only $1.50 in savings. While working as a cook to pay her rent, she used her remaining time to develop hair-care products and sell them door to door.

Imagine that for a moment: a woman with a dream, very little money and no guarantee that her idea would succeed. Despite those circumstances, she started with what she had.

Eventually, her business expanded across the United States and internationally, while trained sales representatives helped distribute her products. The company also created opportunities for thousands of Black women to earn money.

Sarah did not begin as the woman history would eventually remember. Her story developed gradually through the choices, risks and efforts she made along the way.

And that is where her story becomes relevant to you.

Maybe your beginning doesn’t look impressive either

Perhaps your version of $1.50 is not actually money. Instead, it might be the one skill you have, the small business idea sitting inside your notebook, the certificate you are trying to turn into a career, or the tiny social media audience you wish were much bigger.

It could even be the job applications that nobody seems to notice, the little savings you are carefully protecting, or simply the determination to keep going when you have no evidence yet that things will work out.

Whatever your starting point looks like, do not underestimate it simply because it seems small.

After all, a beginning is supposed to be small.

The problem often starts when we look at somebody else’s finished chapter and compare it with our first page. Naturally, the comparison makes us feel behind because we are measuring two completely different stages of a journey.

instead of asking why you are not there yet, consider asking what you can build with what you already have.

That shift in perspective matters because progress does not always begin with having more. Sometimes, it begins with using what is already in your hands.

The woman you envision has to be built

You do not become confident simply because you decide that you want to be confident. Confidence develops through experiences that gradually show you that you can handle difficult situations.

For instance, speaking even when your voice shakes can make the next opportunity less intimidating. Applying for another job after rejection can teach you that disappointment does not have to stop you. Developing a new skill can make you more capable, while taking responsibility for your choices can help you trust yourself more.

Over time, these small experiences begin to influence the way you see yourself.

This is where personal growth becomes more than an idea. Your actions start reinforcing a new understanding of who you are and what you are capable of becoming.

Psychologists describe a related idea as a growth mindset: seeing abilities as capable of developing through effort, effective strategies, support and opportunities to learn. Research discussed by the American Psychological Association also connects growth-oriented beliefs with greater persistence when people encounter challenges.

Of course, that does not mean thinking positively will automatically make every dream happen. Rather, it means you do not have to treat your current abilities as your final abilities.

You can learn.

Also, you can improve.

Or become more capable than you are today.

Sometimes, preparation is the progress

One of the most frustrating seasons in life is the period when you are working hard but cannot see much happening.

You have applied for jobs, practiced your skills, studied, created content, submitted proposals and tried different opportunities. Still, the door has not opened.

At that point, it is easy to wonder whether all your effort has been a waste of time.

But what if some of that time is preparation?

The job may not have arrived yet, but your skills can become stronger while you wait. Although the audience may not have grown as quickly as you hoped, your communication can improve through consistent practice. Even when a business is not profitable yet, learning more about your customers can help you make better decisions later.

In the same way, an opportunity that has not appeared does not mean there is nothing you can do. You can continue preparing so that when the opportunity eventually comes, you are better equipped to handle it.

Consequently, not every season of life will produce visible results.

Some seasons produce capacity.

And capacity matters because the person you become while preparing can be just as important as the opportunity you are preparing for.

Don’t let an unfinished chapter embarrass you

There is a strange pressure to look successful while you are still becoming.

Social media makes that pressure even stronger because you are constantly exposed to announcements of new jobs, businesses, cars, travels, relationships and achievements. After seeing enough of them, it can begin to feel as though everyone else has figured life out while you are still trying to understand yours.

Meanwhile, you might be sitting somewhere thinking, What am I even doing with my life?

Take a breath.

What you see is usually an announcement, not an entire journey.

You do not know how many applications someone submitted before getting that job. Likewise, you cannot see every failed attempt behind a successful business or every sacrifice behind an achievement.

More importantly, another person’s timeline cannot tell you what yours should look like.

Your unfinished chapter is not evidence that your story is going nowhere. It simply means the story is still being written.

There are things you will have to leave behind

Becoming the woman you envision is not only about acquiring new skills, earning more money or achieving bigger goals. In many cases, growth also requires letting go of things that no longer serve the person you are trying to become.

Perhaps you need to release the habit of constantly comparing yourself with other people. Maybe you have to stop waiting for everyone around you to approve of your decisions. You may even need to challenge the belief that you are somehow not good enough.

Sometimes, growth means becoming comfortable with saying no to situations that repeatedly pull you away from the life you are trying to build.

That process can be uncomfortable because familiar does not always mean healthy. Some habits, environments and mindsets can feel safe simply because you have known them for a long time.

The older version of you was doing her best with what she knew at the time. Now that you know more, however, you have the opportunity to make different choices.

That is also part of becoming her.

Your failures don’t get the final word

You will make mistakes. Some opportunities will pass you by, while certain plans will fail despite the effort you put into them. There may even be moments when you wonder whether choosing a completely different path would have saved you from disappointment.

Even so, failure does not have to become your identity.

Research on resilience describes it as the process of adapting to difficult or challenging experiences. The American Psychological Association also notes that the resources and skills associated with resilience can be cultivated and practiced.

That matters because resilience is not simply something that a lucky few people are born with. It can develop through experience, support, reflection and repeated attempts to move forward.

So, when something does not work, try asking a different question.

Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?”, consider asking, “What can this experience teach me?”

The first question can leave you stuck in self-blame, while the second creates room for reflection, adjustment and another attempt.

Sometimes, becoming her means learning how to begin again without allowing yesterday’s disappointment to determine tomorrow’s direction.

You don’t have to become her overnight

Perhaps you have been putting unnecessary pressure on yourself because you want everything at once.

You want the career, the money, the confidence, the recognition, the peaceful life and the fulfilled version of yourself. There is nothing wrong with wanting those things, but expecting them to appear all at once can make the journey feel much heavier than it needs to be.

In reality, becoming the person you dream about usually happens through ordinary decisions repeated over time.

You apply for the opportunity, then learn from the rejection if it does not work out. You read the book because you know knowledge will help you grow. You take the course because there is something you still need to learn. You have the difficult conversation because avoiding it will not help you become more mature.

Gradually, those choices begin to shape your character and your confidence.

That is how becoming her happens: quietly, gradually and often without applause.

One day, you’ll look back

There may come a day when you look back at this version of yourself with tenderness.

You will remember the uncertainty, the applications, the studying and the moments when you wondered whether your efforts would ever pay off. Perhaps you will even remember checking your phone repeatedly, hoping to see an opportunity, a response or a message that could finally change something.

Yet, when you look back with the wisdom that comes from experience, you may understand that those moments were not empty.

The woman you were waiting to become was being built during those very seasons.

She was developing through the applications, gaining knowledge through the studying and becoming more resilient through the failed attempts. Courage was growing each time you found a reason to begin again.

Becoming her was never about pretending that you had already arrived. Instead, it was about refusing to believe that where you started was where you had to finish.

So, where are you now?

Maybe you are not where you want to be, and that is okay.

Perhaps you are still figuring things out. Your finances might not be where you want them to be, your career may still be taking shape, or your confidence could still be growing.

Maybe you are rebuilding a life that did not turn out the way you expected.

There is no shame in that.

What matters is that you do not turn a temporary season into a permanent definition of yourself.

You are allowed to say, “I’m not there yet.”

Those two words — not yet — leave the door open.

Not yet employed, but still preparing.

Nor financially independent, but still working toward stability.

perhaps you’re Not yet confident, but still learning to trust yourself.

Maybe you’re  not yet successful by your own definition, but still taking steps forward.

It could be you’re Not yet where you want to be, but not standing in the same place either.

And perhaps that is enough for today.

Tomorrow, you can take another step. Then, as the days become months and the months become years, those seemingly ordinary steps can begin to form something much bigger than you expected.

Eventually, you may look into the mirror and realize that the woman you spent so long dreaming about is no longer standing somewhere in the future.

She is standing right there.

The woman you envisioned was never created in a single day. She was shaped by every lesson, every attempt, every setback, every brave decision and every small beginning that came before.

You did not wake up one morning and magically become her.

You became her along the way. 🤍
