Topic: Relief

1. Introduction

Relief refers to the shape, height, and physical features of the Earth’s surface. It shows whether land is high or low, flat or steep. Relief greatly influences climate, vegetation, settlement, farming, transport, and economic activities.

2. Meaning of Relief

Relief is the variation in height and form of the land surface above sea level. It includes features such as mountains, plateaus, plains, hills, and valleys.

3. Major Types of Relief Features

A. Mountains

Mountains are very high areas of land with steep slopes and peaks, usually above 600 metres.

Examples of Mountains in Cameroon and Their Locations:

  1. Mount Cameroon
    • Location: South West Region (near Limbe and Buea)
    • Height: About 4,095 m (highest in West Africa)
    • Origin: Volcanic mountain
  2. Mount Manengouba
    • Location: Littoral and South West Regions
  3. Mount Kupe
    • Location: South West Region (near Tombel)
  4. Mount Oku
    • Location: North West Region
    • Part of the Cameroon Volcanic Line

Importance of Mountains:

  • Source of rivers
  • Tourism
  • Volcanic soils good for farming
  • Rainfall formation

B. Plateaus

Plateaus are highlands with flat or gently sloping tops, often between 600 m and 1,500 m.

Examples of Plateaus in Cameroon and Their Locations:

  1. Adamawa Plateau
    • Location: Adamawa Region
    • Divides Cameroon into North and South
  2. Southern Cameroon Plateau
    • Location: Centre, South, and East Regions
  3. Western Highlands / Bamenda Highlands
    • Location: North West and West Regions
  4. Bamileke Plateau
    • Location: West Region (Bafoussam area)

Importance of Plateaus:

  • Good for grazing
  • Suitable for crop farming
  • Moderate climate
  • Settlement areas

C. Plains

Plains are low-lying and flat areas, usually below 300 metres.

Examples of Plains in Cameroon and Their Locations:

  1. Coastal Plain
    • Location: Along the Atlantic coast (Limbe, Douala, Kribi)
  2. Benue Plain
    • Location: North Region, along River Benue
  3. Chad Basin Plain
    • Location: Far North Region, around Lake Chad
  4. Mbere Plain
    • Location: Adamawa and East Regions

Importance of Plains:

  • Farming
  • Transport and road construction
  • Dense population
  • Settlement

D. Hills

Hills are raised areas of land lower than mountains, with gently sloping sides.

Examples of Hills in Cameroon:

  • Mandara Hills – Far North Region (border with Nigeria)
  • Alantika Hills – Adamawa Region

E. Valleys

Valleys are low areas between hills or mountains, usually with rivers.

Examples of Valleys in Cameroon:

  • Benue Valley – North Region
  • Sanaga Valley – Centre and Littoral Regions
  • Nyong Valley – Centre and South Regions

Importance of Valleys:

  • Fertile soils
  • Farming
  • Settlement
  • Transport routes

4. Factors Influencing Relief Formation

A. Internal Forces (Endogenic Forces)

  • Volcanic eruptions (e.g. Mount Cameroon)
  • Folding
  • Faulting
  • Earth movements

B. External Forces (Exogenic Forces)

  • Weathering
  • Erosion by rivers, wind, and rain
  • Deposition

5. Importance of Relief

Relief:

  • Influences climate and rainfall
  • Determines types of vegetation
  • Affects settlement patterns
  • Influences farming methods
  • Affects transport and communication
  • Encourages tourism

6. Summary of Relief of Cameroon

Cameroon is often called “Africa in Miniature” because it has:

  • Mountains (Mount Cameroon)
  • Plateaus (Adamawa Plateau)
