PREAMBLE
Back in the day, I thought hard work was the ultimate key to success. Grind hard, and the world opens up—right? Well, that belief got flipped on its head the day I began service as the Administrative Secretary of AcadEx COGNITIVE. I experienced working with both national and international lecturers and diplomats. Working with the white professors, changed the game for me. These folks were on a whole different level when it came to integrity, time management, and self-awareness. Their vibe? Sharp, professional, no excuses—and it hit me differently. It wasn’t just about what they taught in class; it was about how they lived. They didn’t just talk the talk; they walked it. And that’s when my mindset started to shift.
In this article, I shall share this experience with you, hoping it changes minds.
WHAT INTEGRITY REALLY MEANS 🔍
Let’s keep it real—integrity ain’t just about being “the honest guy.” Nah, it’s bigger than that. It’s about your words matching your actions, every single time. There came a time when Dr. Kami, an AcadEx lecturer told us point-blank:
If you have an appointment with me at 4 p.m., that’s the time to meet me, not the time to leave your house.
💥 Boom! That line hit me like a lightning bolt. It wasn’t just about being on time; it was about respect—for yourself, for others, and for your word. No fake promises. No lame excuses. If you say it, you mean it. Period.
For instance: Picture this—you’re a team lead, and you promise your crew the report by Monday 9 a.m. If you deliver late, even once, guess what? You’ve already chipped away at your credibility. But if you show up early, prepared, and consistent? They know you’re solid. That’s integrity in action, no cap. 🔥
WHY INTEGRITY MATTERS 🏆
Here’s the deal: integrity is the glue that holds relationships, careers, and reputations together. Dr. Kami, an AcadEx lecturer said it best:
If a program begins and you don’t find me there, just conclude that I won’t come because I don’t do late.
⏰ That was the standard. It screamed reliability. And people respected him for it. Folks knew he wasn’t going to waste their time.
For instance: Think about that one friend who always cancels plans last minute. Annoying, right? Now, imagine someone who never flakes, always keeps their word, and shows up early. Who do you trust more? Exactly.
WAYS TO BUILD INTEGRITY 🛠️
- Let Your Yes Be Yes, and Your No Be No: Stop being wishy-washy. If you can’t do it, say so. Simple. 👍
- Keep Your Promises: Under-promise, over-deliver. People will start seeing you as reliable. 💯
- Be Honest: Not the sugar-coated type. Real honesty builds real trust. 🤝
- Own Your Mistakes: Messed up? Say it. Fix it. Move on. 💪
- Respect Time: Yours and theirs. Time is like money—you don’t waste it. 🕰️
- Lead by Example: If you want people to follow, show them the way with actions, not empty talk. 🏅
For instance: Even at work, you can’t talk about punctuality if you’re the one strolling in late with a coffee in hand. Lead with actions, boss.
CHALLENGES IN MAINTAINING INTEGRITY ⚠️
Let’s be real—life’s full of shortcuts. Sometimes, you’ll feel like cutting corners or telling a half-truth to escape heat. But here’s what I learned from AcadEx: the easy way out always costs you more later. Those lecturers? They kept it a hundred. Unpopular? Sometimes. But real? Always. That’s rare in today’s “just do you” world.
BENEFITS OF BUILDING INTEGRITY 🌟
- Trust: People will count on you without a second thought. 🫶
- Respect: You won’t need to beg for it; your consistency earns it. 🎯
- Peace of Mind: No lies to remember, no secrets to hide. 😌
- Leadership: Integrity makes people want to follow you naturally. 🫡
For instance: Nelson Mandela is a classic example. The man spent decades in prison but came out with his integrity intact. That’s why his name still carries weight today. 🕊️
SELF WORTH 💎
Working with the AcadEx team also taught me something deeper: self-worth. When you value yourself, you stop tolerating lateness, dishonesty, and half-baked commitments. You set standards. You respect yourself enough to expect respect from others. Because, let’s face it—if you don’t respect your own time, why should anyone else? 🤷♂️
Take Action Today 📢
- Start small: Be early. Keep your word. ⏳
- Practice daily: Integrity isn’t a one-off thing; it’s a lifestyle. 🏃♂️
- Value time: Time wasted is life wasted. Be intentional. 🕵️
- Level up your standards: Demand the best from yourself first. 🚀
Final thought 💭
Serving as the administrative secretary of AcadEx COGNITIVE has brought meaning to my life. I live the impacts daily. Seeking to model the Director General, a man of integrity, a charismatic leader.
The AcadEx lecturers don’t just lecture—they lived the lessons. Their words—“Let your yes be yes, and your no be no”—still echo in my mind. They taught me integrity isn’t just a rulebook thing; it’s your brand. Your legacy. Your real deal. And trust me, once you start living it, life hits different—in the best way possible. I encourage you to take action today.
