BIOLOGY

Definition of a cell   Cell is the basic, functional and structural unit of life

Discovery of cell

Discovered by Robert hooke in 1665 using cork

    Cell theory

It was proposed by schleiden and schwann.  Which are:

  1. All living organisms are made up of cells
  2. Cell is the basic unit of life
  3. New cell arises from pre-existing cell

Types of cell

1) Prokaryotic cell

They are unicellular cell and lack membrane bound organelles

Example : Bacteria cell

2) Eukaryotic cell

They are multicellular cell and have membrane bound organelles

Example :plant and animal cell

Cell structures

  • Cell membrane
  • Cell wall

  • Cytoplasm

  • mitochondria

  • vacuole

  • nucleus

  • Ribosomes etc

Practical tasks

  1. Compare between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
  2. State the function of the various cell parts that exist
  3. Draw a well label diagram of a plant and a bacteria cell.
